How Important Is the Wine Decanter?

Defined Tag:

Most people would have heard of a wine decanter but many may not know what it actually is used for.  Well, without sounding too obvious, yes it is to store different wines but that is not the sole reason.  It is actually to seperate the sediment that has formed at the bottom of the bottle from the actual beverage.  This build up of sediment happens over a matter of time.

This seperation process is important, because if that build up mixes in with the beverage it can leave a very bitter taste. This action is important especially for older versions, because they will have had a lot of time to gather unwanted sediment.

Another benefit of this process is that during the transfer from bottle to decanter, the liquid is mixed with oxygen, causing it to activate and accelerate which is what gives the beverage it's kick. This process is especially helpful for younger samples that haven’t had as much time to develop the richness and taste of the older ones.

The particular type of seperation vessel you buy can be important too. Clear, crystal decanters are best if you like to see your beverage. However, if you don’t care whether you have a good view of or not, there are also decanters with lots of designs and detail on them. Both types can be equally beautiful, depending on the quality of them. You will however find one to suit your tastes and budget.

To get the very best out of your wine decanter you must be particular and make sure that it is free of any smells and that it is completely clean from dust, dirt or grime.  This is very important for the process to work correctly.   Mineral water is the best way to clean it as soap or detergent may not be rinsed off sufficiently.
